Daycare near home or near office? A guide for Gurgaon's working parents

Choosing daycare near Cyber City, Udyog Vihar or Golf Course Road, or near home? Compare commutes, sick days, pickups and office creches for Gurgaon parents.

For most Gurgaon families, a daycare near home works better than one near the office. That's especially true if you work from home some days or share pickups. A daycare near Cyber City or your workplace can suit you if one parent does both trips on a fixed schedule. The deciding question is simple: who can reach your child fastest when something goes wrong?

The quick comparison

When near the office works

A daycare near Cyber City, Udyog Vihar or Golf Course Road can be a good fit if:

  • One parent does both drop-off and pickup almost every day
  • That parent's hours are predictable and they rarely travel
  • They work from the office most days
  • The commute is manageable with a child in the car

The big advantage is reach. If the centre calls at 11 am, you can be there in minutes. Some parents also like the commute itself as time together.

When near home works

A daycare near home usually suits you better if:

  • You work from home some days, or your hybrid pattern changes
  • Both parents share pickups, or a grandparent sometimes helps
  • Either parent travels for work
  • Your commute is long or unpredictable

Think through the hard days

Ordinary days are easy to plan. It's the hard days that test your choice. Walk through each of these.

Sick days

Young children often pick up bugs when they first start daycare. Many centres will call you to collect a child with a fever.

  • Who will go, and how long will it take them?
  • If you're in a meeting, who is the backup?
  • Is there a second adult on the authorised pickup list?

Make sure both parents are on the form and on the centre's call list. Our post on dads and daycare covers sharing this fairly.

Late meetings

  • What's the centre's latest pickup time?
  • How is late pickup charged?
  • Who collects your child if you're stuck?

Travel and leave

  • What happens when the office parent travels?
  • Is the centre open on your office holidays, or only on its own calendar?

If you have no good answer to one of these, plan your backup now. Our guide to backup childcare covers the options.

Office creches

Some employers run a creche on site or have a tie-up with a centre nearby. If yours does, it's worth a look.

Ask HR:

  • Is there a creche, or a partner centre, and who runs it?
  • What ages does it take, and what are the hours?
  • Is there a waitlist?
  • What does it cost, and is any of it covered?
  • Can you visit before you sign up?

Judge an office creche the same way as any other centre. Visit, count the adults, check pickup rules and look at the routine. Our complete checklist for choosing a daycare works for both.

Rules on workplace creches depend on the law and your employer. Our guide to creche at work in India explains more and how to raise it with HR.

The commute itself

In Gurgaon, the drive is part of the decision.

  • Drive the route at the real time, ideally with your child in the car.
  • Think about the return trip. A tired toddler in evening traffic is different from a fresh one at 9 am.
  • Check the drop-off point. Is there somewhere safe to stop near the centre?
  • If the centre offers transport, ask who drives, whether there's an attendant and how long the longest ride is.

Our area guides cover the main hubs, including Golf Course Road and DLF and Golf Course Extension and Sohna Road.

A middle path

Some families choose a centre between home and office, on the main route. Others use a centre near home as the main plan and a backup near the office for travel weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to have daycare near home or work?

Near home suits most families, especially with work-from-home days or shared pickups. Near work can suit you if one parent does both trips and has predictable hours. Think about who can reach the centre fastest on a sick day.

Are there daycares near Cyber City?

Yes, there are centres around Cyber City, Udyog Vihar and Golf Course Road. Shortlist by your route and hours, then visit at least three. Check the latest pickup time and late fee.

What should I ask HR about an office creche?

Ask who runs it, the age range, hours, waitlist, cost and whether you can visit first. Then judge it like any other centre: staff, ratio, safety and routine.

What if I change jobs?

If your daycare is near your office, a job change may mean moving your child too. That's one reason many parents prefer a centre near home. Changing centres is possible, but plan a gentle settling-in period.
